No I don't think we would like you girls to play hard to get. Just be yourself and be sweet. Don't forget to smile! A lot of people, including us guys, don't smile at girls. Just touch him a little bit when your talking to him, you know like on the arm or chest, somewhere not overly sexual. And playing hard to get is fine, just make sure your not sending him mixed signals, there's nothing more frustrating then when you have no idea what she thinks.
Whenever you with try to smile a lot with him and laugh at his jokes but just don't follow him everywhere ( guys hate that) especially if he doesnt like you.
you have really answered this yourself the chase is okay but no guy wants to lose its an ego thing so if he thinks he has no chance he would rather give up than face embarrassment in front of his friends
you should knock his books off of his hands and pick thyem up for him and start talking with him
